Travel to Chiloé Island's capital, Castro, from Santiago, Puerto Montt and other Chilean airports. Airport transfers are included from Castro Airport. If you are travelling to Chiloé Island from Puerto Varas or Puerto Montt, we can arrange transfers by road (including ferry service) to the Island.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1

Subject to your arrival time and preferences, we recommend a horseback ride this afternoon to familiarise yourself with your Chiloé Island surroundings. Departing from the Refugia Chiloé stables, the expedition unfolds along ancient trails, providing a unique perspective of the countryside and observations that only an adventure on horseback can offer. Accompanied by seasoned horsemen, explore the island's Pullao Wetlands and surrounding countryside on 2-3 hour experience. The Chilote horses are accustomed to the island’s diverse terrain and will become your trusted companion. Tonight enjoy a drink at the bar with a view to the sea, before sitting down to dinner in the restaurant where local and international dishes are served.

Day 2

After breakfast, you'll set off on the scenic drive to the north-western tip of Chiloé Island where your walk on the Sendero de Chile - a long-distance trail connecting the entire length of Chile - begins. Your guided trek starts at the beautiful Bay of Duhatao, following the twisting coastal cliffs to perfectly positioned lookouts tucked in between deep forested sections of trail. Birdlife is everywhere here, with Hummingbirds dashing between the cover of ancient trees amid the call of Chucao, Rayaditos and other native songbirds. After a couple of hours hiking, an uphill climb will reward you with views of the ocean and out to the Chepu River; a perfect place to enjoy a trail lunch. Continue as the trail descends gradually to the islet of Aulen, where you will have a relaxing stroll along the beach to finish. You will be met by boat for your cruise back to your transfer vehicle, and on to the hotel. After your full day out, relax at Refugia's spa or catch the sunset with a pre-dinner drink before dining in the restaurant tonight.

Day 3

Another day of adventure awaits, with an excursion to two of Chiloé's picturesque neighbouring islands. Cruise from the lodge jetty onboard the unique Williche boat to traditional Chelin, a beautiful island dotted with original houses and neoclassical World Heritage Site church, which has been painstakingly preserved with the help of local artisans and architects. After exploring the church, continue on foot to the village cemetery, a fascinating sight to behold with tombstones imitating the village’s very own wooden shingled homes. Take a moment to view neighbouring islands from a lookout before travelling along forest paths back to the Williche and setting sail for Quehui Island. The calm waters of the estuary are perfect for kayaking, SUP'ing and cruising the shoreline by Zodiac, with the option to be as active as you like or relax onboard with a glass of wine on the deck. This excursion includes full catered lunch and stocked bar onboard to ensure a perfect day out on the water. Return to the comforts of Refugia Chiloé for an afternoon on the terrace, at the bar or by the pool.

Day 4

Enjoy a leisurely breakfast before another beautiful hike, this time in Tepuhueico Park on the eastern side of the island. The Tricolor hike takes you through vibrant changing landscapes of valdivian rainforest, sand and sea and offers dramatic clifftop views across the coast. Learn about the island's history as you pass through the abandoned Quilan Estate, once a sheep ranch and gold-panning site, and discover the island's Indigenous heritage. This hiking route offers a kaleidoscope of changing scenery including dense native forests filled with birdlife, and the contrast of the sparkling sea and sand dunes. Enjoy a packed lunch on the trail today, and return by car to Refugia in time for some relaxation before dinner.

Day 5

Enjoy a leisurely breakfast at the hotel and time to relax and enjoy the lodge facilities this morning. Your onward transfer to Castro airport is included to complete your journey.
